Besides delivery cost, they need to pay for other costs (e.g: healtcare, payroll). Usually it's paid by the profit that they made by providing service. But in this case, the profit is small and the other costs are too big. See 6:00

Why didn't he mention that the majority of items (and weight) delivered by the USPS is junkmail? Just subsidize the delivery of rural packages and let the USPS die already.

    • slybuster
      slybuster

@bilias hour The majority of mail delivered by the USPS is junk-mail. In fact, the USPS relies on junk-mail as a means of revenue and has sought to increase the amount of junk-mail it sends. It's nice that you like receiving physical letters but that has nothing to do with whether or not the USPS is necessary. I'll try to be as concise as possible: The need for slow physical communication falls with every passing year. It started with faxing, then emails, now instantaneous communication via cellphones (which the vast VAST majority of the population carries with them at all times). This renders the central purpose, and basis for the USPS business model, more irrelevant with each passing day. This is why Last Week Tonight didn't address the actual business model of the USPS and went for emotional arguments about fostering community and the delivery of medication to war veterans (neither of these have anything to do with making the USPS viable- the former isn't common nor necessary (we used to hang out at pharmacies to drink soda) or even intentional and the latter can be subsidized in different ways). The USPS isn't only non-essential but is also unnecessary. Let's talk about rural communities. Does the USPS service communities that aren't profitable? It does, but not in a way more efficient than direct subsidies- not to mention that these communities constitute less than 0.001% of mail delivery. So, why does Oliver bring this up? Because the argument has to be framed emotionally instead of logically. Let's frame this argument logically: I'll bet you didn't consider large companies like Amazon are subsidized by the USPS; UPS and FedEx even send some of their own packages through the USPS! Does this help the average consumer (i.e. Oliver makes the baseless claim that ending the USPS would cause a substantial spike in consumer cost)? Well, that depends if you think paying an extra .000003 cents on the same day delivery of M&Ms a substantial cost for an essential product. So, the USPS is subsidising big businesses (and it's also doing so at a greater cost than a direct subsidy). So, why does the left wish to maintain the USPS? Because the issue is framed as being about a 'social programme.' Give an inch, take a mile. However, this is probably a losing battle and I highly doubt the USPS will exist 20 - 30 years from now. Aside, I consider it pretty dishonest that Oliver can argue the USPS needs to raise prices to be more profitable while also arguing that the USPS lowers costs for the average consumer- these things aren't mutually exclusive. Any argument about spreading out the cost of such deliveries isn't unique to the USPS and is actually more in line with a UPS/FedEx business model. Also, the banking tangent Oliver goes on was actually pioneered and has already been already deployed by UPS (i.e. the USPS didn't innovate this and it's dishonest to suggest that it did as a way to stay relevant). tl;dr: *The majority of mail sent by the USPS is junk-mail.* *The central basis for the existence of the USPS is physical mail while such is becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing day.* *The continued existence of the USPS isn't necessary for rural deliveries.* *The USPS subsidizes big businesses like Amazon/UPS/FedEx.* *The USPS does not significantly lower consumer costs.* *The continuance of the USPS is actually framed as that of a social programme.* *Oliver made some dishonest arguments; an obvious one being in regard to innovations pioneered and already put into action by UPS.* EDIT: I'd like to add that the USPS has a significant impact on fuel consumption and that this impacts the environment. I'd also like to add that not choosing same day or shortened delivery has been cited as a way the general public can reduce its carbon footprint.

Hey John - I know you like poking fun at New Zealand. But how about doing a story comparing NZ's COVID-19 response to Trump's? In a few weeks we will we be at Alert Level 1, i.e. normal domestic economic activity. All businesses operating and only border restrictions in place. We will also have zero new cases, zero active cases and zero new deaths. From a population of 5 million we will have had about 1500 cases and 22 deaths. On a per head of population basis that is the equivalent of 98,400 cases in the USA with 1,440 deaths. From first case to elimination - 4 months. Beat that Trump!

Having seen what USPS charges to send packages to Canada, the concept of paying 4x that is ludicrous. USPS has also messed up delivering packages to me multiple times, apparently reading my country as a state. That being said, the service they are providing is extremely essential to America and they should be bailed out - especially now. And maybe giving them the chance to adjust prices and have the time and funds to improve would better both their service and their prices both across America and into international orders. So I guess my comment boils down to "I can see Mr. Oliver's point", and "please just keep your mouth shut for once, Trump"?

Another thing that USPS does is allowing people in rural areas to vote. In Canada, Canadian CONservatives tried to privatize Canada Post. Then they realized that they will lose the next election in a landslide because rural Canadians have to pay extraordinary amounts to get packages delivered. The CONservatives in Canada instead lobbied to remove door-to-door delivery services. For example, you have to go to the local post office to get your mail. Thankfully, CONservatives lost the next election thanks to educated and intelligent voters. Did you know the Alberta Oil and Gas industry lobbied to remove or reduce taxes to government now complaints that they are given COVID-19 funds from the Canadian government with restrictions attached? Privatize the profits and socialize the costs!

Canada Post is a comparable service: it is a Crown corporation that is funded from its own operations, it services all addresses in Canada and is federally regulated. Yet, it has turned a profit in all but two or three years since its conversion from a federal department to a Crown corperation in the early 1980s. They make buckets of money on parcels and return all the profits to the federal government.

Looks like some companies lobbied our representatives to ensure zero competition from the US Postal Service... Or maybe not... But, my old grandpa used to say, just follow the money and you will find your answer... I am sure nothing will be done about that... :) BTW Mr. Oliver, will you dare to use your skills to also dig out the profits and charge comparison between the other delivery services and the US Postal Service... Maybe you can add some positive commentary to the community so we can get educated and elect other representatives that will also need to be lobbied after they threaten to pass a law to correct the one that has the US Postal service begging for money, that "Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act" looks like it was drafted to push the service down... maybe even eliminate it... so competitive, well run companies that deliver stuff can make a much more efficient use of their price structures to deliver the items... what a nice deal they got... you invest in lobbying and you get your investment back thousands of times over... but I doubt you will waste your valuable non criticizing time on such a low and unimportant subject :)

While this is an America problem, here in Canada I would like to help out and get some of your awesome stamps. Sadly (or maybe SAD! I'm not quite sure) I can't get the stamps delivered to me because the good ol' US of A postal service doesn't have an option to make it available here (or anywhere else for that matter, which maybe part of MAGA but I personally think America is better when it is a part of the rest of the world.) Is there anyway I can get around this? I would donate directly if I have to, even if that means I don't get the stamps, and I can't believe I'm saying that because I definitely want one of those ChiiJohn stamps! In closing please let me know if I can help with this obvious problem, maybe mostly because of Trump's desire to lash out at any opposition, to help with such a vital service that America provides
